Most of the time, bodybuilders do 5 exercises per muscle group, 3 to 4 sets per exercise, 7 to 9 repetitions per set, and rest 1-2 mins between sets and exercises according to an online survey of 127 bodybuilders.
Six weeks before a competition, the athletes did 3 to 4 sets per exercise, 10 to 15 repetitions per set, and significantly decreased aerobic exercise, 76% took anabolic steroids and, all athletes used supplements such as serum protein and creatine monohydrate.
Researchers concluded that some techniques used for caloric restriction prior to competition can compromise muscle strength.
